Size for new booth compressor
What size compressor do use use for your spraybooth?
We are looking at a new compressor for our paint booth as the old one is no longer functioning. I am thinking about going 7.5hp single phase 80gal. Problem is I am not sure of the numbers and need to do the research yet, but if we went to water borne that wouldn't be enough. But we don't want to do WB anyway, at least not until forced to. In the meantime if our booth outgrows that comp. we can use it for the shop air or as a spare in the shop.
Also does anyone have experience with the Sharpe Dryaire membrane dryer? What is your experience with its functioning and usefulness?

I use two 10 h.p. 3 phase Champions, one for the body shop and one for the paint shop. One is 15 years old and the other is 11 years old and neither have presented any problems or maintainence issues. I have 2 spray booths and 3 painters and paint on average 18 cars a week. The Champion keeps up just fine but if I were to change to waterborne, the 10 horse piston type compressor will not provide enough air to power the fans and the shop too. Champions are very affordable with a compresssor like mine costing around $3400.
In the event that I do decide to go to water some day, instead of buying a new screw type compressor, I will buy a compressor just big enough to power the fans.

When sizing for compressors, in relation to going to waterborne paint, not all air movement systems require air-compressor air. Check with a good local jobber on air movement options in your area.
I have promoted nothing but water in my area for past 3 years w/ great success.. don't wait until "forced to", there is much more participation/help from jobbers/ paint manufacturers when it is not mandated in your area.
Sharpe membrane dryer does not work well with older/ worn-out compressors, since the membrane is a non-serviceable part, once it is saturated with oil the whole unit is junk! Had one in a dealership with 2 old compressors, within a year the Sharpe unit was useless!...better to go with a 3-stage desiccant system where you can replace all filters & desiccant material.

I have seen the electric powered fans and can't seem to get a straight answer as to whether they can pass muster and be in compliance with fire code and OSHA. It would stand to reason that when applying a waterbase material, the chance of fire is nil, but when did common sense ever have anything to do with anything?
