I was curious if anyone knows of any teacher training courses. This would not be for technical knowledge, more for learning new techniques for teaching, new delivery methods, etc.

Thank you very much for your help.

Would anybody be interested in having a seminar where we could invite a sandpaper rep, and paint rep, even a safety expert, ect., to give updated info on new products and how to effectly relay that information to our students. Maybe we could have a roundtable discussion on your favorite teaching approach. A discussion on task grading , how important is it?, and do the stuents take it seriously? What we do to motivate students?
After 20 yrs of teaching, I am looking for new ideas, and a reason to keep going on.
Do you use the I-Car system for Grading tasks. Its real good and is detailed try it you will like it. Dave Baltz
thanks, Ill check it out
Most large companies have programs called Training the Trainer and it's critical to recharge your batteries and look outward.

The key now is using technology and other delivery methods and mediums to reach your students.

I think a roundtable would be extremely effective. The site has just about every expert in each field you can imagine.

Melissa--- Is I-CAR looking to develop classes? If we vote/agree to a roundtable our Multi-Media chat room here holds 50 people. Video, VOIP and Text chat. Easy way to talk to and see everyone at the same time.
this is exactly what Im looking for:
"Most large companies have programs called Training the Trainer and it's critical to recharge your batteries and look outward."
Now what type of forum would be most effictive for us?
I like Web chat... it's like Skype but we can get 50 people in the "room" it allows you to see and hear who's speaking and it has document, photo and video desktop sharing.

I was a trainer in the insurance industry for over 10 years. I'm going to send a note to see if I can't get some of my former co-workers on to lead a monthly discussion group.

Thanks!
Hi Melissa, In Massachusetts to get your teacher certificate you must take seven teaching classes. I take them through Fitchburg State College, they have an Occupational Education bachelors degree program. There web site is www.fsc.edu. They offer the classes through U-MASS college also. Hope that helps.

Thanks Dave
These are all great suggestions for a variety of instructor needs, new and ongoing. If Melissa's question is related to training of a non-technical nature, I can offer several options that I have personally utilized in the past.

The University of Wisconsin offered a Technical Instructor Institute (TII) with several different course options. I could not find anything at their web site about current offerings so maybe one of our Wisconsin members can comment.

Dr. Robert Mager developed courses for instructors, instructional designers and managers of technical training operations. These courses are facilitated through the Center for Effective Performance (CEP), and can be viewed at cepworldwide.com. Although not inexpensive, all of the courses are hands on, intense and effective. One course supports instructor-lead training skills, but Mager also provides training for the development of self-paced learning modules. When I worked as an instructional designer for American Honda we utilized the criterion-referenced instruction concept for the development of all Honda and Acura techncal training (self-paced with no lecture, and a criteria-based evaluation by the instructor upon completion).

Are you currently teaching? Have you gone though the I-CAR IQW training Instructor Qualification Training.
Most school offer training on teaching methods as part of there mandated PD professional development.
Also if you take any technical training you can take note as to some of the methods used to present the information that you found useful and effective. Hope this helps Rich.
Yes Rich I have done the I car IQW when I started the Welding Qualificationl, but that was several yrs ago. I think I made a decision on training. I was just looking for a workshop that would encourage me to encourage students. Looking for something to help out with burn-out, dont want to get there again.
Thanks for all that responded to the posts, and again, a big thanks to Melissa and Kristen
I would love to have a real sharing round table in Massachusetts for collision repair instructors
to bring the best of what they do, project, lesson, props any thing that instructor feel is a must do for there program and share it we should help one and other out more create a more useful professional development, it would also be a great if we could get some good useful media technology training to be included. Where to begin?
Exciting Update!

I've had some contact from several Universities and the Learning and Development departments of some major insurance companies. Starting in June or July we will have a monthly roundtable style conference call for short presentations and discussions on teaching styles, lesson plans, engaging non-traditional students and how to inspire and classes with varying skill levels.

Please send me any suggestions for speakers or topics. Special thanks to all the companies and individuals that have contacted Collision Hub wanting to get involved with this group.
