I am interested in hearing from any instructors or technical school directors who have run into problems with receiving Enhancement Grants from their states based on a statistic from the government stating that “the collision industry is a low or no demand” hiring industry.
Apparently Missouri has run into this problem and it seems to be a little like chasing shadows to pin down just how they arrive at their determination of that classification. Missouri has denied Enhancement grants to technical schools because of this classification. Most schools depend on these grants for updates and improvements in equipment and teaching aids in their programs.
We are looking for where the problem lies in preparing the figures since what we hear at every meeting is, “where are we going to get the technicians of the future”? With the changing construction of the automobile almost monthly the school instructors need every advantage they can get in training new technicians and retraining the adult population that is in the industry now thus the loss of any grant is extremely important to not only the schools but to the industry as a whole.
We have to realize that “reduce the budget” is the buzz word of necessity everywhere along with “we need to add jobs”. One way to do this is by education in the proper techniques of repairing today’s automobile not the cars of the past where electronics were nonexistent and steel was steel…not the many variations thereof. Without the proper tools to educate we are only enhancing the problems and forcing our instructors to “chase their tails” teaching without the proper equipment.
Bottom line I am in the need of data from not only Missouri but all over to build a case to present to the proper people to show that the process of reporting on the status of hiring in the collision industry is flawed and needs to be revisited so our needs are properly addressed. Any help anyone can be will be greatly appreciated. You may contact me through Collision Hub or directly through my email bobsmith@storminc.com
