I don't know about you, but I'm really tired of hearing all the excuses of why shops will not hire female techncians and painters. Year after year, we award women scholarships and prizes for their skills and performance in this industry, but we can't get them jobs.

An industry trade magazine has just publshed an article that, hopefully, will trouble you as much as it has thoroughly upset me.
http://www.fenderbender.com/FenderBender/March-2008/Women-Need-Apply/

The message, as I understand it from this article, is that you should hire women, but before you do you're going to have to change your entire business model, and it's going to cost you lots in legal expenses. I have to wonder with stories like this, why would any shop hire a woman?

In my opinion, this type of thinking encourages discrimination in the industry. It's time we take control of our own story.

I tried to read it but the link stated "The item you were looking for is no longer published." Did you copy it by chance for us to read?. I am thinking they caught some flack for it and took it down?

They did take it down and I think they saw my point. While the intention was good the underlying message was harmful.

We're still digging to see if anyone has a copy from the magazine

Thank you for highlighting this article.  Does this say that we need technicians, women are more than capable and willing to fill the jobs and yet the cultural evolution of the shop just isn't there yet?

Actually no
I think I would have been less aggressive if it had addressed women as technicians. It started with the demographics that show you will eventually be hiring women then went right to all the potential "legal" hassels of brining women on the work floor.
The exact same "reasons" I hear from shops on why they won't hire women.
