Your Computer’s Security Goes Beyond Hackers, Viruses and Malware

Over the years Anders & Associates has done network designs and installations for shops all over the Midwest. Surprisingly, one of the toughest parts of the job has been to have the owners consider the physical security of their computers. Physical security is one of the most basic parts of the design but getting it accomplished is often a tough part of the job.

Windows 7: Are You Ready?

October 22nd is a special day in the computer world for on this day Microsoft releases its new version of the Windows Desktop operating system “Windows 7” In my opinion Microsoft Vista was rushed to market and as a consequence is a failure. Too many of the features either did not work well or were poorly executed. With Windows 7, I believe, the powers that be at Microsoft sent down the message “Don’t screw this up!”

Topic suggestions for the Computers In Collision Group.

Hi everyone,
Sorry I have been absent for so long but business has kept me from writing much. It appears that the virus gremlins are out in full force again! In the last 3 weeks I have cleaned or rebuilt at least 15 systems. I am open to topics for the Computers in Collision Group so leave me a comment or e-mail with your suggestions.

What's In A Word? (Password That is.)

Recently, I had a client who had their server hacked. We knew this because the home page on every computer changed to some bank in Germany. The hacker’s goal was to have a bank customer login to my client’s hacked computer and reveal their account numbers and passwords. The value of an invaded computer is that the hacker is not easily traced. I won’t spend time on the how and why hackers do these things. I think our time is better spent on how to prevent this from happening to your… Continue

Computers in the Recession.

Let face it, buying new computers during this recession may not the best way to spend your company’s money. Yet, the need for more robust computing is still a requirement. For example, Mitchell’s current Ultramate upgrade to version 7 requires a minimum of 1 gigabyte of RAM. (RAM is your computer’s memory not hard drive space). If you have an older computer, it may not meet this requirement. During the good times, that older machine most likely would simply be replaced. Now that times are… Continue

Thanks, I will. New time is set for after the holidays and after year end closing which will probably put is at the end of January. My IT person constantly talks to Mitchell people but he and I know that if there are problems to be worked out at our shop it falls on the two of us to work them out. That can be overwhelming at times.

Susan,
Thanks for the update. What exactly is the hitch between ABS and Business Works? A number of my customers use this combination and perhaps there is a solution for your computer tech to implement.

Believe it or not we have not updated yet. There are still a few problems between the ABS and BusinessWorks interface so we are waiting until they get worked out. We rely so heavily on this software it would bring our shop to a "stand still" if they did not work properly. Also, there is an ABS and HP printer driver problem that needs to be fixed.
So many local shops were haulted after the update and some are still having problems that we are holding off as long as possible. My "computer guy" builds all our work stations and our server from scratch so he has ordered parts and we are beginning to replace one station at a time. The computers we are using now are several years old but he periodically improves them. If there is a problem it can be isolated to the workstation. He will build the server and update our software once he is comfortable with the fixes. There will not be that "perfect moment" but hopefully it will be close to perfect.

Bob: I recently bought an HP Netbook running XP and Explorer 8. I tried logging into the shop network and got all kinds of security warnings. What changes do I have to make to Explorer setup to allow me to connect?

Thanks Bob - I'm still trying to find my way around. I haven't had much time to look at everything yet.

We upgraded Mitchell ABS to version 8.2.2 and lost our marketing data. I just read on the Mitchell Knowledge Base that there is a patch available to solve this problem. However, it says you have to have a backup of the data from the previous version in order to recover the data. Bob, I know how important backups are, and I'm sure you made one. However I don't know where to look or what to look for. Can you help?

Thanks! We are using CCC Pathways, Mitchell ABS and Sage Businessworks. We are due to update server and software but have put it off for a few months because of problems other shops are having when updating. I think we'll be ready in the next couple of weeks.
