The most important question!

We all know how important questions are, but do we take the time to ask the fundamental question? Is what I'm doing working? If it is, then I need to do more of it, if it isn't, I need to do something different. Da! The obvious sometimes eludes us in mysterious ways. We seem to want to try doing what isn't working over and over thinking that one day it will work. Just bite the bullet and move on. There are no straight lines in life, you have to constantly correct a left step with a right step… Continue

Coffee

Who are you drinking coffee with? One of the many benefits of being a business owner is the ability to connect with other business owners/managers. It so important to do that, although they probable do something entirely different than you, that is the benefit. Take some time out every month and take at least one business owner/manager out for coffee, it's a great way to get a fresh perspective.

Celebrate your small victories.

We all get excited when we hit the home-run, but most games aren't won on the big hit, they are won on the base hits. Don't forget to celebrate the quick wins in your business, this will keep the organization motivated to move on to something bigger.

Make it a great day!

Will you be missed?

Here is a tough question: If you went out of business would you be missed? It's one of those questions that is almost impossible to answer, and really it's not the answer were looking for it's the thought behind the question that is important. Are you really doing all you can to preserve your position in the community? If you don't think you'll be missed, what can you do differently to change that perception?

It's all about the question!

Hiring

Why do we need to hire someone in the first place? It's obvious, we need some work done. There in-lies the problem, most people hire for "skill" instead of hiring for "fit." We need people that fit into the organization more than we need a particular skill set. Skills are realatively easy to train, and there are a lot of available resources out there to facilitate their skills training. Howard Schultz, founder of… Continue

Obsticles

The path to lofty goals are always riddled with obstacles, however, they become less important if you have a clear path. Clarity takes effort, it takes thought, and more importantly, it takes commitment. What about surprises? Are things really a surprise? When you get sick, is that a surprise? Do you really believe you can live your life without sickness?

Has your context changed?

Make it a great day!

Indy Body Shop Business Conference

Body Shop Business put on a wonderful conference Sept 16-18.

Very professional and informative. The theme, success through change. I have a question for shop owners. What concerns you most about change? I have another question for technicians. Would you consider training an apprentice if, you earned more money, extend your longevity, and had a system that made it exciting? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

Proof of Labor Charges

Every week brings something else to the fore front. I've had calls from different areas of the country from shops citing incidents where the adjuster wants to see or get a copy of other companies estimates to prove what that company is payinng the shop.

Now I can understand an adjuster wanting to know if he is paying what is fair but again it falls into the question also of "A repairer doesn't have to charge everyone the same...this is what I am charging you." Also if his rates are… Continue

Competition

When I ask people who they compete with, they typically name the shop down the street. Although that is true, perhaps the bigger competitor is yourself. When we think of competing it's usually in the context of I'm great and your not, I win and you lose. Why not compete to eliminate low customer engagement, or perhaps we can use quality as our context and say, WE will crush poor quality. Having a different perspective is sometimes all that is needed to have a meaningful impact in your business.… Continue

Tribes

If you have any interest in creating an organization that grows beyond your own thoughts and actions, I suggest taking a look at "Tribal Leadership" by Dave Logan. I just finished the audio book, which by the way is a free down load at www.triballeadership.net, he really puts cultural life cycles in perspective.

The Energy Game

No matter where you turn, it seems energy is a topic. It could be conservation of energy, it could be developing alternative sources, or the effects that energy has on the environment. There is never a lack of content. I too have an interest in energy, particular how it effects the environment. I'm not talking about the natural environment, I'm talking about your business environment. My interest lies in how energy within your business can effect your organizational goals. Lets face it, he who… Continue

Feather Prime & Block

Is Feather, Prime and Block a needed procedure or is it just pie in the sky? We all know the body technician has to block to see if his work is good so why do we need more? Is the repair industry just being greedy? Can’t you paint over 150-180 sanding marks?

Ok, I hear the cash registers ringing at the hardware store from the sale of rope. I just wanted to see if everyone was listening.

My question really is: If the repair technician stops at 150-180, which seems to be an… Continue

CSI vs. Customer Engagement

I've been waiting to talk about this...but apprehensive. The rational being in me wants to make a statements like: The system of customer satisfaction is broken! That sounds pretty nuetral doesn't it? My emotional being wants to say: CSI really sucks and has no meaning, why are we doing this, this is stupid? Are there people that really spend time thinking about the questions that are asked to the customer? If so, what planet are they from? Like I said, that was my emotional being, that is… Continue

Long lists never get done

I'm a list guy, everyday I take out 3x5 card and write down my daily list of "To Do's." To be honest, I never get them all done, and sometimes I don't get any of them done. I think we all know the drill, so I decide to instead write down a major and minor task for the day on my 3x5 card. Guess what, I've been getting them done, so do the math, if you can get two important things done everyday that amounts to 730 things done a year. Wow! By the way, sometimes your card might say "Do… Continue

A collision with personal development

How much time do you spend on personal development? Research shows that most people spend their extra time on entertainment: you know, going to the movies, watching their favorite sitcom, and dining, etc.. I agreed, we all need to take time and have some fun, but what if instead you set aside an hour a day to read? That would be 40-50 books a year! Do you think you might be able to create a competitive advantage with that knowledge? Here is another opportunity to build on personal growth, the… Continue
