I just returned from CIC and the lack of understanding about the seriousness of compliance with the new EPA 6H Rule really blew my mind. Maybe I am the only one in the room that believed this is a big deal, but I do know that the IL EPA is taking it seriously too, so here is the timetable once again.
Jan 10, 2010 - Initial notification This was the paperwork that you needed to file to let the EPA know that you understood that that rule was going to take effect in another year…

This Sunday October 10th a special fundraiser will be held at NACE in Las Vegas. The event will feature our very own, very talented Rod Enlow and Rick Tuuri starring as the musical duo of "Total Loss". We thought we would have a fun evening to raise awareness and some funds for the initiatives of the Collision Industry Foundation.
Shops Against Hunger is an industry wide project that started in April. The goal of the project is three fold,…

The Collision Industry Foundation is putting out a call to all members of the collision industry to help in its charitable work on behalf of the collision industry in 2010. There are two projects this year that have touched the hearts of the trustees, but we need participation of the entire industry.

CIF is trying to raise money for food banks around the country. We were told by Gerry Brisson of Gleaners Food Bank that $1 can feed a…

A friend of ours recently lost his shop to a fire. That in itself was a tragedy, but fortunately he had decent insurance, or so it seemed. As I hear it because his bank is the mortgage holder on his property, they called in the mortgage loan and took all of the insurance proceeds leaving him with no collateral, no loan and no financing for rebuilding. I have put in a call to our agent to see to whom the proceeds are payable and if we have enough insurance for a situation like this. It seems…

A few days ago, some very important guests spent the day at our shop. They were on an all day visit and we were happy to host them. As we had a busy day planned, they asked that we have lunch at a place where they could eat quickly. We have a local restaurant here famed for its great selections of grilled items, salads and pasta. The food is great, but the service has gotten spotty. Carry out orders are filled wrong, everyone is in too much of a hurry, and sometimes there is too much salt on…

Twas the night before Christmas
And all thru the store
No parts lay around
Not even a battery core
The cars were in their stalls
At rest and disrepair
Waiting for a technician
With hammer and dolly to be there
They all sighed and asked
What a tragedy, why me?
Why did my tires slip
And I hit a tree?
And, all of a sudden
There was such a clatter
They all turned their lights on
To see what was the…

Every shop in the country has less than two months to comply with the initial notification requirement of the EPA's new surface coating rule. If you don't know anything about it, the form must be filed with the EPA before Jan 11, 2010. Read this again, BEFORE Jan 11, 2010! If you don't have an environmental company to help you out, you can get help from one of the offices listed on the form. A copy of the form and brief review of the regulation can be found in the Body Shop Owner/Manager group…

I guess there is something to be said for a slow down. We were slow the beginning of this week and it gave us the perfect opportunity to switch over to waterborne base coat. We are way ahead of schedule and among the first in our county to make the conversion. I can tell you that I was pretty apprehensive about it, mostly because of the low cost investment in equipment. We bought an air powered fan and a couple of stands that hold 4 diffusers, also…

In 2004, several members of the National Autobody Council decided that the charitable giving that the group was doing needed to be organized under a charitable foundation, and the Collision Industry Foundation was born. Its first giving project conducted by NABC was to raise $500,000 toward the building of a medical facitliy at Camp Mak A Dream in Missoula Montana. The camp provides no-cost camping stays for children with active cancer. Marco Grossi, one of the founders of CIF, was a benefactor…

Interesting article this morning, http://autos.aol.com/article/cash-for-clunkers-greenwash, states that according to a survey done in late August more than 17% now have some doubt about letting a government subsidy put them even further into debt. Buyer's remorse is on the rise as consumers save less, defer home improvements and lower payments on their credit cards in order to pay for that new car they just bought.
According to the article, "When the government set out to stimulate…

This morning, I had the privilege of doing a radio blog today at www.vehiclevibes.com an Allstate sponsored consumer website for women. When you visit the site, click on Vehicle Vibes Radio and listen to the 30 minute interview. It addresses women in the collision industry, women in business as well as some crash and safety information. I was very lucky to connect with the person who set up the interview through local networking. Enjoy!

One of my good friends sells cars for a local Chrysler, Jeep, Mazda dealership. He called today and I asked him if his dealership was doing ok with it and he told me they had pretty much sold all of their inventory and the only problem with that was they would not be getting any new inventory any time soon. That is the boomerang effect, the sugar rush, and this month's sales might be a shock.
I also heard that charities that normally receive car donations are now receiving few or…

This morning I had another opportunity to address a summer school class at one of our local high schools. The session was interactive and there were about 20 students in the class. How does a body shop owner go about getting to speak in a classroom of any high school or college?
I had been trying to get into the high school driver ed classes for years with limited success and even less enthusiasm on the school's part. The only time they ever needed us was when there was an inservice day,…

This are lots of ways to network in your business community. Lots of folks getting together in order to grow relationships in many different ways. Some of those may be through networking meetings (in person no less!), chamber of commerce mixers, and of course golf outings. I used to volunteer at a hole and got to meet a lot of people for about 1 minute each, not very memorable for any of us. Then someone suggested I play in an outing. Well the last time I picked up a golf club (aside from…

We just completed our first Soaps It Up car wash with the Lake County Indian Princesses and it was a blast. We washed over 40 cars and had a cook out for the volunteers. There was lots of splashing and giggling and we could not have had a more beautiful day. Proceeds will be split between the Make a Wish Foundation and the YMCA youth exploration group (Princesses).…

How many of you have a certified car seat installer in your shop? How many of you even knew that you might need to certifiy in order to install kids' car seats? I took the course 6 years ago. It entailed 32 hours of classroom and extensive hands on testing and training. I have since been recertified twice and it wasn't just a simple test, it was as rigorous as the original training. It is still one of the best things we do here. My standing marketing phrase to parents is, "if you can trust us…

The economy has turned us all upside down. The trickle down effect is far reaching. If shops don't have vehicles to repair, their vendors in turn feel the decline in sales. What have you done in your business to try and turn things around?

There is a collision industry group where women come together with shared goals and experiences. The Women's Industry Network or WIN began with the goal of greatly enhancing the collision repair industry—and the role of women within it—through education, networking, and sharing of resources. Our shared experiences transcend the boundaries of different roles within in the collision industry. WIN also honors deserving students and members of the collision repair communities with scholarships that…
